Message from the Dean Emeritus Elwood M. Rich (1920-2015)
California Southern Law School was founded in 1971 to provide adults the opportunity to study law while taking into consideration the necessities of working at a full time job and the responsibilities of raising a family. I have always taken pride in the fact that the philosophy of California Southern Law School is a philosophy of opportunity. An applicant who meets the minimum requirements as set forth by the Committee of Bar Examiners of The State Bar of California is welcome. There are no other tests which need to be taken for admittance. There are no procedures by which applicants who meet the requirements are turned away. This is our policy because I believe that the study of law is a valuable quest; one which changes the manner in which people view and think about their world.
For the most part our instructors teach in the area of their particular expertise, bringing their experiences to the classroom in a way which further illuminates the learning process. The study of law requires organization and sacrifice. The process by which students learn to study the law is an education unto itself. By developing the ability to discern the facts of consequence, to recognize the pertinent issues, and to apply the proper rules of law, students develop the analytical tools necessary for a successful legal career. The person who possesses common sense and industry can reap rewards which far eclipse the hours required for success.
From January 1, 2008 until the school's closure in 2020 the degree-granting authority for California Southern Law School was the Committee of Bar Examiners.
California Southern Law School confers the professional degree of Juris Doctor.

Elwood M. Rich, Founder and Dean Emeritus (1920-2015)
