California Southern Law School is a formally organized educational institution incorporated in the State of California.  The law school offers an evening program leading to a professional degree.  The degree of Juris Doctor is conferred upon graduates who satisfactorily fulfill the requirements of the school.  All students who graduate with the Juris Doctor degree who have previously registered with the Committee of Bar Examiners of the State of California as a law student, and who have passed the First-Year Law Students' Examination are eligible to take the California Bar Examination.

The curriculum requires four years of classroom work and study.  The school operates on a semester system -- two fifteen-week semesters in the fall and spring, and an eight-week summer session, excluding examination week.   The fall semester starts in late August or early September, the spring semester starts in January, and the summer session in June.

Students enroll in nine units of courses per semester.  During the fall and spring semesters students attend three courses per week -- three evenings a week for three hours per evening, nine classroom hours per week.  The required summer courses are two units or three units of credit each.  Students complete the required summer courses in two or three summer sessions.  Students attend summer classes three evenings a week or less.

Classes during fall and spring terms are held Monday through Thursday, from 6:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.  During the summer session, class hours for 2 unit courses are 6:30 p.m. to 9:50 p.m. and class hours for 3 unit courses are 6:45 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for Legal Research.

Method of Instruction [top]

The case method of study is the basic classroom tool.  Students study actual cases selected to illustrate particular problems of law and to demonstrate solutions to these problems and the reasons for the solutions.

Instructors lead the discussion of the case material and present supplementary lectures.  The discussions are designed to aid the student in understanding the development of law to its current state, and to pose questions of current interest related to particular problems under study.  Students learn to develop their own analytical abilities and to apply abstract principles of law to concrete situations.
